Tourism Team goes on High Flying Adventure

Hello again, it’s Grace from your Fountain Hills Tourism Division!  Last fall my colleague and I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Four Peaks Amethyst Mine courtesy of Sami’s Fine Jewelry.   To say that we were awe struck by the experience would be an understatement.  I could go on for pages about how picturesque the mountains were, how exhilarating the helicopter ride was, the history and character of the miners or the way the gems transformed the mountain from amazing to extraordinary; but I think you might prefer I  show you!

After an unbelievable visual journey to the top of the mountain, Rachael and I stepped off the helicopter and onto one of the tallest plateaus of the Four Peaks Mountain range, right  between peaks three and four.  We then met the owners of the mine who gave us a history of the mine.  Purchased in 1998, the mine produces tons (literally tons) on amethyst gems each year.  Those gems are packaged and taken periodically down the mountain to a refinery where they are inspected and polished.  From those tons of gems that are mined, less than 50 pounds of gems are pure enough to them be appraised, sold, and molded into the beautiful jewelry that we love so much!

You might ask, who do we thank for all of the hard work that goes into mining these beauties?  Meet our friend Mike the miner!  He and his wife Tai are the only two who work in the mine.  Their decades of experience working in mining conditions has made them experts not only in working the mine, but braving the weather atop the mountain and delicately excavating these precious stones from the caverns.

Rachael and I had an incredible time atop the mountain, we found our inner pioneer woman and adventurer spirit.  I have to say this tour is a must for anyone and everyone who wants to see a true hidden gem of Arizona … yes pun intended!  To see out entire photographic adventure, click here to see the album!
