Why Travel Matters in Fountain Hills, Arizona!

We pass popular tourist sites like our World Famous Fountain every day; we may not even think of how it supports our community. But our local hometown restaurants and others like our hiking trails, botanical gardens, and special events are the backbones of Fountain Hills. These places define our community, provide our families with jobs and have given us and thousands of annual visitors a lifetime of memories.

Travel matters, and it improves Fountain Hills in ways that have a wide-reaching impact on local residents. Travel has an impact that we do not always see: travel can strengthen families, foster hometown pride, and build bridges that connect us with one another.

Travel Matters to America

At the national level, travel is critical to the U.S. economy and American jobs. As a leader in workforce development and career advancement–travel creates and supports 15.7 million jobs across the U.S.–making it the seventh-largest private-sector employer. In 2018, traveler spending generated $171 billion in total tax revenue, including $78.6 billion in state and local revenue. That $78.6 billion can pay for a host of critical resources: it’s more than enough to pay all state and local police and firefighters, or the more than one million public high school teachers.

Think back to your first job. Maybe you worked at one of our local restaurants, hotels, spas or offices that have been around a while, or maybe your kids work there now. For many–one third of Americans to be exact–travel is the front door to a promising career. Americans whose first job in travel have an average career salary of $81,900, and two in 5 of those whose first job was in travel are now earning more than $100,000.

Think about how travel matters to local, well-loved small business IN Fountain Hills: travel-dependent leisure and hospitality is the largest small business employer in the U.S.

Those are only a few reasons why it’s so important to keep welcoming visitors to Fountain Hills—and why our industry is elevating the message of “Travel Matters” during National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW)
May 5-11. We encourage you to join us in observing NTTW this year, and celebrate all that travel does for Fountain Hills, and for our country as a whole.

AZ Four Peaks Amethyst

Did you know that Arizona is home to the only commercially run Amethyst mine in the United States?

In fact the Arizona Four Peaks Amethyst mine is believed to be the only precious stone mine in the United States that requires a helicopter to transport tools and remove the amethyst rough from the mine. The location of the mine is remote and is located in the most rugged parts of the Matatzal Mountains (46 miles from Phoenix).

Arizona Four Peaks Amethyst Mine Tour – Sami’s Fine Jewelry

April 2016 & October 2016

Sami’s Fine Jewelry is offering the trip of a lifetime! Be one of the few to tour the Arizona Four Peaks Amethyst Mine. Located in the rugged desert terrain of the Matazal Mountains, this Arizona mine is one of Arizona’s true treasures. Your day will begin at Sami Fine Jewelry, in Fountain Hills. Provided transportation will escort you to the helicopter take-off point. Not only will the helicopter fly over the breathtaking views of Four Peaks, but it will also be dropping guests off at the Amethyst mine. The mine is not open to the public; however it will be for this special event! During the time there, the miners and owner will take people on a private tour around and inside of the mine. Every guest that takes part in this once in a lifetime experience will have an opportunity to mine for their own treasure and keep their own authentic Four Peaks amethyst souvenir stone. We currently offer this tour twice per year and space is very limited.

Are you green with envy over all of these opportunities to indulge yourself in Amethyst?  Not to worry, you can still catch this very violet phenomenon!  Call now to make your reservations for any and all of these incredible services and opportunities!

A Look Back

A Look Back

The holiday season is in full swing and the New Year quickly approaches, and as with many others this time of year, we too are reflecting on what the past 365 days have meant to us.

2014.  In a word; WOW!  The Fountain Hills Office of Tourism has many incredible things to reflect on this year.  First thing is first, 2014 has brought the tourism program under Town direction and with that the creation of our dynamic duo!  Where would I be without my other half, Rachael?  Well I can tell you one thing for sure; Tourism Thursdays would be very boring without her!  Over the past year Rachael and I have been working hard to bring excitement and exposure to Fountain Hills.  From this program we have launched a successful social media campaign, redesigned our tourism look and launched a major marketing campaign with one goal in mind; we want more visitors!  However, this past year has not just been a journey for the tourism program; it has been a journey for us as well.

We’ve gone to statewide conferences, farmers markets, recreation classes, and special events.  We’ve gorged ourselves on town staples like Senor Taco, Dj’s Bagel Café, and Chocofin.  We have found our fresh, found our food, found our festivals, found our family, and found our fun, but most importantly we have met some incredible people around town and that means that we have found it all!

We may be the team who are charged with bringing this town to visitor’s attention, but in all honesty Fountain Hills has brought itself to our attention.  We have experienced Fountain Hills and now it’s your turn!  We hope this blog inspires you to get out there, try something new, experience something unique that only this incredible town can offer, and find what Fountain Hills means to you.  Here’s to 2015 an everything it has in store for us, see you next year!

The Tourism Team

Intern Adventures

Many interns, who are less fortunate than myself, do not get to boast they are told to spend their work hours experiencing town events and getting to know the many local businesses around the area. Instead they are stuck inside an office building staring out the window as they count down the hours to closing time. While I am no stranger to a long work day, I have been happily consumed by today’s work, before I even notice that it is already time for lunch.Intern Photo

Every now and then I get to spend a little time in town but today’s trip outside the office was special because, for the first time in my three months at the Office of Tourism, I got to dine at Dj’s Bagel Cafe with none other than my own boss. I mean who could possibly say no to a bagel sandwich?

Needless to say I had an incredible BLT on a Jalapeño bagel that was almost as big as me, which really isn’t that hard to find for someone who is only 5’ 2”. So after a great lunch, my supervisor took me up to Lake Overlook Trail, just in time to see the Fountain go off.  It was quite the sight and I must admit I had never seen Fountain Hills look so incredible. The park below us was an incredible sea off green surrounding the sky-high geyser shooting out from the Fountain. It’s no wonder so many visitors travel from far and wide to spend a little time here.

I guess what I am really trying to say is that this internship has already become more than I could have imagined. I dare another intern to say they enjoyed a hike with their boss for lunch. I have yet to have a typical day at the office and I hope I never do.

Here’s to many more intern adventures!
