• Saguaro with a Rat’s Staircase: Did you know that packrats rely on saguaros for drinking water during times of drought? Get an up-close look at a 100-year-old saguaro with a spiral tunnel made by packrats digging for water.
• Granite Boulders: Approximately 1.4 billion years ago—when magma welled up from the earth’s mantle, then slowly cooled and solidified deep underground—massive granite boulders were formed. Throughout the botanical garden, you’ll find a variety of granite features making up the view and walking areas.
• Historical Dam: Before Fountain Hills Botanical Garden became a public attraction, this piece of land served as water supply for the cattle and the ranch of P Bar Ranch (1941). When you explore the garden, you’ll see the historic dam, a concrete housing pad made for the workers, and other remnants. DO NOT STAND ON OR TOUCH THE DAM. While the dam was extremely strong in its day, it’s now dangerous due to deteriorating conditions.
• Keller Tank: Similar to the Historic Dam, Keller Tank was built and used by cowboys and ranchers from P Bar in the 1940s. Keller Tank captured water for cattle in Arizona’s dry terrain. The water source was Emerald Wash (a dry wash, or arroyo, that allowed water to flow during dense rain). Washes are extremely important in the desert, providing food, water, and shelter for the wildlife found in the garden today (including birds, bobcats, javelinas, snakes, rabbits, and more). Explore Keller Tank, Emerald Wash, and the surrounding plant life when you visit Fountain Hills Botanical Garden.
• Quartz Vein: Millions of years of erosion have given visitors of the Fountain Hills Botanical Garden a unique view: find a linear formation (vein) of quartz on this nature trail. Quartz is an igneous rock held together by crystal-looking patterns.
• Saguaro Skeleton: Who knew that decaying cacti could still be useful to wildlife and humans? See what a cacti skeleton looks like and learn about how these plant remains continue to serve the planet, from becoming shelters, being made into furniture, and being used in modern ways for navigation and crop harvesting.
• P Bar Ranch Hand Camp: Fountain Hills Botanical Garden is a historic spot for P Bar Ranch. In addition to the dam, workers’ housing, and Keller Tank, you can explore the P Bar Ranch Hand building—where ranch hands lived, ate, and slept. P Bar Ranch Hand Camp features the original fencing of the hand camp.

The Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden was founded by Jane Haynes in 1975 as a wildlife preserve and garden but was first recorded as a cattle ranch! (Early 1900s). The garden's history is riveting, and each decade highlights the effort to preserve this special piece of the Sonoran Desert.

• Early 1900s: Part of the P Bar (P-) Cattle Ranch. Henry Pemberton homesteaded 33,000 acres, which now make up the garden, all of Fountain Hills, and McDowell Mountain Regional Park.
• 1941: The Keller dam was built by Page Land and Cattle Company.
• 1974: ‘Green Garden’ Club of the Fountain Hills Women’s Club and McCulloch Properties scouted and selected this land for the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden preserve. Jane and Pattie Haynes researched five potential sites prior to selecting this piece of land.
• 1975: Jane Haynes and Margaret (Meg) Burton (a high school biology teacher who was working on her Ph.D. from ASU on ‘impact of development in the desert’) team up to build the initial hiking trail. Meg Burton and her students also installed the first signs identifying plants throughout the garden.
• 1984: After several years of vandalism, Terry Barwegen Jr (Eagle Scout) chose to breathe new life in the garden.
• 1985: The botanical garden is restored with the assistance of Jane Hayes, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Fountain Hills, and Terry Barwegen Jr.
• 1986: The Garden re-opens on February 8th, 1986.
• 1989-1990s: The Town of Fountain Hills becomes incorporated and builds the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden into its five-year plan.
• 2006: The Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden Society is created, and the Town of Fountain Hills agrees to restore the original trail.
• 2009: On November 7, 2009, the garden opened for a third time, with a newly paved parking lot, new plant and site signage, seating areas, and a kiosk.
• 2025: The Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
• Today: Volunteers maintain the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden. “The other reviews are quite accurate. It undulate up down and around and feels like a bigger area that it actually is. Walked it after a night of rain - GORGEOUS. The water from the bottom of the old stone dam comes through pipe and runs along the rocks at the bottom of the canyon like a little creek bed. The signage about the plants is really great, not only naming the plant, but explaining a bit about their history & usage by the local natives. Other signs give education about geology on the trail. Fountain Hills Botanical Garden features four public parking spots and one handicapped spot at the entrance of the garden. Street parking is allowed as long as the road and paved paths remain clear.

If you run into a full parking lot and don’t want to park on the street, consider visiting the garden during non-peak hours (most days between 6:00- 9:00 AM and 12:00 - 4:00 PM). The garden’s most popular days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
