Rock Illusions Hike

Date: Feb 17, 2026
Time: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Do you ever spot familiar shapes in clouds or rocks? That psychological phenomenon is called 'Pareidolia'. In Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, there’s an area where striking rock formations resemble animals, faces, and other recognizable figures. People report seeing a rabbit, a hog, a hippo and an enormous standing bear. These natural formations have long been a subject of fascination, inspiring tales of mythology, spirituality and human curiosity.
Join us for a fun 5 mile round-trip hike, where you'll discover rocks that bring familiar shapes and objects to life. Carpooling will be available from the Fountain Hills Library/Museum parking lot.
Bring water, snacks; wear a hat and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Hiking poles if needed. No dogs, please.
