Yes, there’s water in the desert. And it’s stunning. Saguaro Lake is just a short drive from Fountain Hills and offers kayaking, boat rentals, and shoreline picnics. Look for wild horses at the water’s edge around sunrise. There’s a great spot for families called Butcher Jones Beach, where kids can play in the water. Get there early though, parking fills up fast.

Fort McDowell

Part resort, part cultural center, part Old West experience. Go horseback riding, learn about Yavapai culture, or catch a rodeo event if the timing’s right in Fort McDowell. It’s a blend of history and outdoor adventure that’s close to town.

Sonoran Desert Golf Trail

Try the Lake Overlook Trail or desert edge viewpoints just outside town for the best visibility. Bring a red flashlight for enhanced visibility without polluting wildlife.

ADERO Scottsdale

Even if you’re not staying at the resort, ADERO offers occasional stargazing events, yoga with a view, and a patio that makes it hard to leave. The resort embraces the dark sky lifestyle and often partners with astronomy guides.

Astrophotography & Group Pictures

Fountain Hills is photogenic by day—but at night, it’s something else entirely. With low light pollution and wide-open views, the stars come out in full force. Add in desert sunsets, mountain backdrops, and public art around every corner, and you’ve got a full camera roll waiting to happen.

Best Areas to View the Night Sky & Take Photos

Fountain Hills is one of only a handful of certified Dark Sky Communities in the world. That means real stargazing, without streetlight glare and city haze. Head to the Lake Overlook Trail or the trails near the Botanical Garden for some of the best sky visibility and astrophotography spots. For additional ideas, view our dark sky map.

Up-and-Coming Dark Sky Discovery Center

Slated to become a new star in Fountain Hills' crown, the Dark Sky Discovery Center will offer immersive exhibits, telescopes, and educational programming for visitors of all ages. While it’s still in development, the buzz is already building. Expect this to be a hub for stargazers, families, and science lovers when it opens.

Best Spots for Group Pictures & Selfies

Pose by one of the quirky or dramatic sculptures along the Public Art Walk. Or line up your group for a sun-drenched trail shot during wildflower season in early spring. You’ll find plenty of natural backdrops that make even casual photos feel frame-worthy.
